About
Our Mission & Vision
President's Message
Today, it is difficult to discuss innovation in science and technology without convergence. However, the reality of the research environment we face remains confined within the narrow boundaries of individual affiliated institutions. Behind the outward appearance of massive research funding and flashy achievements, countless researchers are struggling alone amidst disconnected communication and administrative barriers.
The Korea Applied Science Research Association (KASRA) was founded by taking an objective look at this harsh reality. Our association isn't formed solely to expand in scale or secure more project grants.
Our ultimate goal is to create a "philosophy-first research institute" driven by scientific vision rather than the logic of capital and administration. In nations where basic and applied sciences are firmly rooted, successful research coalition models exist—such as Germany's Max Planck Society and the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) in the United States. These organizations guarantee researcher autonomy and support long-term visions at the private level, going beyond state-led initiatives. It is now essential that South Korea break down institutional barriers to establish a self-sustaining, independent private research association where researchers are truly at the center.
The Applied Science Research Association will serve as that exemplary first model. To achieve this, we are not stopping at vague declarations; we are quietly executing our physical independence. While it's a complex process, we are securing our own real estate and building an independent research facility that will serve as a hub for research and exchange.
As a concrete first step, we are building a 'Shared Computing Center' to resolve the infrastructure cost issues that are difficult for individual researchers to bear. We have completed the design and commenced foundation work this spring. To maximize cost efficiency, we have adopted a modular cooling structure and plan to expand gradually according to future demand.
Furthermore, to eliminate unnecessary administrative waste and provide an environment where researchers can focus solely on their work, we have completed the setup of an 'AI Secretariat.' Based on Single Sign-On (SSO), we have automated and AI-integrated all operational processes—from HR, research fund management, and legal advisory to document drafting and approval, equipment management, and business trip and expense registration. We will avoid exaggerated promises. Instead, we will focus on resolving practical difficulties in the field one by one, allowing researchers to concentrate entirely on their core research.
We ask for the objective advice and participation of our fellow researchers in this challenging journey to restore a healthy scientific ecosystem where researchers are the true masters. Thank you.
Jeongbin Park, President of KASRA
